Kind Pegasus
Sex Female
Derpy Hooves is the fan-given name of a gray Pegasus pony. She received the name from the show's internet following due to her having a cross-eyed "derpy" expression in the first episode. The name has since been adopted by the crew and Hasbro. Starting with Feeling Pinkie Keen, the show's crew began giving the pony crossed eyes intentionally, as a nod to the fans. The character is addressed by Rainbow Dash in The Last Roundup as Derpy, where she speaks for the first time. The scene was later altered so Rainbow Dash no longer names Derpy, and her voice was changed. Derpy also shares her design with Raindrops.

OriginEdit

The face that started it all, in Friendship is Magic, part 1
ThrowawaytvAdded by Throwawaytv
Alert viewers of the show noticed a googly-eyed Pegasus in the series' first episode, standing in the background in the crowd in Twilight Sparkle's welcoming party. After the image was captured and posted on 4chan's comics and cartoons board /co/, fans began speculating of the nature of this odd pony.[1] The name she was given, Derpy Hooves, is derived from the slang term "derp", which is associated with someone who behaves in a silly manner and is often connected with crossed eyes.

Crew involvementEdit

Wall eyesEdit

Derpy in Feeling Pinkie Keen.
This gray Pegasus with a bubbles cutie mark was one of several background ponies, chosen from a palette and placed in the scenes on the whim of layout artists. At first, the pony's face wasn't supposed to be visible in that particular scene, but a later layout change uncovered it.[2] Jayson Thiessen, the supervising director of the show, stated that he noticed and was amused by her expression. Since Hasbro had already given the episode a green light, he didn't order fixing Derpy's eyes.[3] Thiessen relayed in a Q&A that he was so delighted after discovering popularity of Derpy that he requested altering Derpy's eyes in all episodes that hadn't been sent to the Hub yet.[3]

NameEdit

Lauren Faust has acknowledged the fan following of Derpy. Before the name Derpy was used by the production crew, Faust stated that in one of the unaired episodes at the time, Winter Wrap Up, there is a mention of a "featherbrained" Pegasus named Ditzy Doo whose appearance is never established on-screen, and should Ditzy make an appearance the show may assign Derpy's design to her.[4] Faust later stated that "it sounds like [the name has] finally landed on Derpy Hooves".[5]

Even though background ponies have no official names, an animator from the Philippine studio working on the show said that Derpy was nicknamed Stoneface, Bubbles, Bubblehead, and Ditzy by the crew.[6] Thiessen later relayed that the Canadian crew has adopted the name Derpy.[7][8] Derpy is featured in her Nightmare Night paper bags costume in the Castle Creator flash game, with the file name for her asset containing the word "Derpy".[9] A December 2011 update to the game contained another Derpy asset, wearing a reindeer cap and a red nose, this time with its file name containing the phrase "DH_definitely_canon".[10] The day Hearth's Warming Eve aired, The Hub's Facebook page posted a message encouraging readers to "spot fan favorite Derpy" in the episode.[11]

The character is called "Derpy" on-screen in The Last Roundup, detailed below. The episode's writer noted that the character's name in the script was originally Ditzy Doo, and she was requested to change the name to Derpy as a "tip of the hat" to the fans.[12]

Charity auctionEdit

Lauren Faust charity sketch of Derpy
Lauren Faust participated in a charity auction for the 2011 Japan relief effort by donating several of her My Little Pony Friendship is Magic production sketches. In addition to sketches drawn in 2008, she drew a new sketch of Derpy, which sold for 2,151 USD.[13] The character was explicitly called Derpy Hooves by the auctioneer.

MerchandisingEdit

Officially licensed apparel sporting Derpy was first made available on August 2011 at the online store WeLoveFine,[14] though the store carries fan-designs which refer to various characters by various fan-given names. More designs were later made available on WeLoveFine and at Hot Topic retail stores. She is also featured on the Comic Con 2011 promotional poster.

As a background ponyEdit

Muffins!
ThrowawaytvAdded by Throwawaytv
Derpy first appears in the first episode of the series in the background of several scenes and, as noted above, makes her googly-eyed appearance at Twilight Sparkle's welcoming party.

Derpy can be seen throughout the season trotting through a park, helping with storm preparations, participating in the Running of the Leaves, visiting Ponyville's market, and more. She is one of the ponies admiring Pinkie Pie's "baked bads" in Applebuck Season, delivering the line "muffins" among the crowd,[dubious – discuss‍] along with Minuette and Amethyst Star, whose mouths also match the spoken line. She appears with intentionally crossed eyes in Feeling Pinkie Keen; when Twilight spies on Pinkie Pie, a series of objects falls on her head: a flower pot, an anvil, a cart of hay and finally a piano. A camera pan reveals that the items were dropped by Derpy and her friend Raindrops, who are hovering next to a movers' truck. In Green Isn't Your Color, she is heard gasping in shock at Fluttershy's catwalk antics.

VariationsEdit

There are three characters that are identical to Derpy with exception of their hair color in Winter Wrap Up, and one more in The Cutie Mark Chronicles. The latter appears alongside Derpy in crowd shots and has orange hair, while the former three appear in the musical sequences and have either red, pale blue, or light purple hair. Background ponies often appear throughout episodes with slight color variations, particularly in crowd shots.

As a scripted characterEdit

Wrestling with the Mayor
ThrowawaytvAdded by Throwawaytv
Derpy appears in nineteen episodes of season one as a background character. For season two, she has gained a scripted-character status rather than an arbitrary background pony, and she is considered a "Where's Waldo"-type challenge for the fans.[15]

In the remastered version of the opening sequence that is first used in Lesson Zero, she appears in the top window of the first train car.

She is one of the ponies under the effects of Twilight Sparkle's spell on her doll, Smarty Pants, in Lesson Zero. When Princess Celestia removes the spell from everyone, Derpy finds herself fighting with the Mayor, and returns to her derped-face self. In the photo on the right her face is the same face shown in the very first episode of season one.

Derpy is dressed in several brown paper bags in Luna Eclipsed, and participates in Applejack's apple bob activity during Nightmare Night with Golden Harvest. However, while bobbing for apples she accidentally pulls the plug, causing all the water in the bob to go down the drain.

Filly Derpy in "The Cutie Pox"
ThrowawaytvAdded by Throwawaytv
She makes a brief cameo in Sisterhooves Social among the crowd listening to Granny Smith's announcement. In The Cutie Pox, a wall-eyed Pegasus filly with the same color scheme as Derpy appears briefly for one shot in the schoolyard, with most of her body obscured by Apple Bloom and another filly. Derpy makes a brief appearance in the doorway to Fluttershy's chicken coop in May the Best Pet Win!, an episode otherwise devoid of background ponies.

She appears briefly in The Mysterious Mare Do Well among the crowd cheering after Rainbow Dash saves the old folks falling on the balcony. She appears in Sweet and Elite along with many other ponies during a shot in the song Becoming Popular, wearing the same paper bag that was part of her costume in Luna Eclipsed, in addition to a pearl necklace. She pops out of a well in-between Lyra Heartstrings and Bon Bon in Secret of My Excess. She rides the train to Canterlot in Hearth's Warming Eve. Later, she pops out from behind the curtain to wave at the audience before the show. She walks away sad afterwards when the Stage Manager stops her. At the end of the episode, she talks in the background with Amethyst Star.

She appears frequently throughout the musical sequence The Flim Flam Brothers in the episode The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000, as well as in the crowd watching the competition. She appears in Hearts and Hooves Day in three village shots, one standing next to an unknown filly and twice standing next to Doctor Whooves on the bridge. In A Friend in Deed, she appears twice, first flying upside down in the snow globe Pinkie Pie finds in Cranky Doodle Donkey's things and the second time by a stand in Ponyville square with two other ponies.

In Putting Your Hoof Down, she first appears in the market scene, approaching the asparagus stand while bearing muffin-sealed saddlebags, where she reacts to the stall holder's lack of asparagus. Later, she appears in the crowd at Iron Will's seminar.

Derpy appears quite frequently in Hurricane Fluttershy. She first appears at the beginning reading a flyer that Rainbow Dash dropped with only one of her eyes, the other looking elsewhere, and again as part of the ponies participating in the Wing Speed testing. She is than seen as part of the tornado team led by Rainbow Dash. It should be noted that, aside from her speaking role in the Last Roundup, this is the episode Derpy has appeared in the most. Derpy appears again in A Canterlot Wedding - Part 2. She appears at three different times in the crowd of ponies. The first time when Queen Chrysalis talks to Princess Cadance, the second time when she watches the bride enter and the third time when the wedded pair is about to leave. Strangly, her eyes are derped in her first appearance, normal in her second appearance and only one of her eyes is clearly visable in her third appearance.

Speaking roleEdit

Derpy with Rainbow Dash in The Last Roundup.
SWFlashAdded by SWFlash
Derpy has a significant speaking role in The Last Roundup. The scene starts with Rainbow Dash getting the tip of her tail singed by a lightning bolt, coming from a gray storm cloud that Derpy is bouncing on. Dash tells her, "Now, careful, Derpy. You don't wanna do any more damage than you've already done", pointing to the broken and crashing roof of the Ponyville town hall. Derpy replies, "I just don't know what went wrong", and shocks herself from another bolt of lightning from the cloud she's bouncing on. She flies by Rainbow Dash and compliments her work, but bumps into a pillar behind her, and sends it hurtling to the ground. Rainbow Dash tries to stop it but she smashes through the floor with the pillar. Derpy sticks her head in the hole asking if Rainbow Dash is okay and asks if there's anything she can do to help, but Rainbow Dash flies up and tells her to sit there and do nothing. When Derpy sits down in response, the floor below her starts to crack and she falls through, grabbing Rainbow Dash and pulling her down along for the ride. When the Mayor gives her speech in honor of Applejack, Derpy sticks out of the hole in the broken floor and cheers for Applejack, but she lets go and falls down once again. Her eyes are crossed through the majority of the scene.

ProductionEdit

Derpy is voiced by Tabitha St. Germain in the original cut.[16] Germain was not aware at the time that Derpy is female and voiced her "with a neighbor's son in mind."[17] The episode was storyboarded by Sabrina Alberghetti and Nicole Wang.[18][19] Alberghetti was reminded of herself in the portrayal of Derpy as an "accident-prone klutz".[20] Derpy was originally named "Ditzy" in the episode's production and was portrayed as "ditzy" by the writer, Amy Keating Rogers. Rogers was requested to rename the pony to "Derpy" as a "tip of the hat" to fans.[12]

Subsequent alterationEdit

The episode was removed from iTunes a week after its release, and put back up on 24 February 2012, with Derpy's scene altered: a few words are omitted from the dialog, in particular Rainbow Dash does not name Derpy; Derpy's voice is different and more feminine; and Derpy's eyes are not as acutely crossed in a few of the shots in the scene. This alteration does not appear in The Friendship Express DVD. An April 14, 2012 rerun of the episode on the Hub used the altered scene, but the closed captions were not adjusted.

The decision to alter the character was made by Hasbro or The Hub, in response to emails complaining about the character's portrayal and the word "Derpy", both of which have been construed as offensive to disabled people.[12]

  • I think Derpy's speaking days are over. If they have her speak it will have to be with the new voice, and they'd have to change her name to Ditzy Do since they can't call her Derpy anymore. It's a huge can of worms that Studio B should not open if they want to maintain any sort of sanity, but I think it's for the best. Derpy's fans were getting out of control with their requests for Studio B to keep giving her bigger roles, and the controversy surround her is the perfect reason not to. This way they don't have to fully retcon the original broadcast of The Last Roundup, and at the same time they can keep Hasbro happy by not using the offending word or characterization in the future.

  • I'm not afraid couse derpy will be removed. studio B is a clever group im sure they find a way for her. Maybe she help for the cmc to get their cutie mark or the mane6 to defeat something, they just need to be creative

    • The "Derpy" situation has become such a mess that I don't think that she's going to do anything that prominent or up-front. The controversy after the edit was so big that any detailed portrayal of her would be a risk.

However, we have it on good authority that she won't be removed from the show.

  • Here's an idea. In the original episode her name WAS said, but never spelled/written out. Wouldn't it have been easier for Hasbro's PR dept. to just say to anyone who complained: "No no, her canon name is now DERBY Hooves/Doo, as in Kentucky Derby, you know like in the famous horse race? We were thinking about naming her that other word you thought you heard, but some people found it offensive." and then not make any changes at all? Then if your ear wanted to hear DerPy it could still hear Derpy and you would be happy. And if your ear wanted to hear DerBy, a perfectly innocuous word naming races, especially horse ones, you would also be happy. Everyone gets a name they like and no money need be spent on any retcons!

    • That plan is not only crazy enough to have been formulated by Derpy herself, but it just might be crazy enough to work!

    • I'm really like this idea and i hope the hasbro, studioB or anyone read this couse this could solve our problem and mate.. you are a genious

    • They already found Derpy offensive, they wouldn't have any problems finding Derby offensive.

    • That might have worked if her name had been the only problem. "Derby" doesn't have any offensive connotations that I've ever heard, but if that were the extent of it, the most they would have done would be to edit out Rainbow Dash saying her name. Nice try, though.

  • I don't find Derpy offensive at all. if anything, she's just a pony thats a little different, and thats okay right? Derpy should be teaching us love and acceptance of people who may be different, because despite that, theyre still just like us. i really hope they dont change derpy's name or remove her from the show. She is one of my favourite ponies, and I love her to bits. If they ever do change her name "officially" to Ditzy or something, no matter what she will always be Derpy in the hearts of the fans.

    • Derpy's special traits are what make her the most sympathetic of all ponies, IMO, because real people all have some problematic/special traits, too! My bad nickname in school is Stick because I am too skinny and weak, but I don't let those negative names make me give up. There will always be negative people who label you in a mean way, but don't let that limit your self esteem! Go Derpy!

    • The problem was that between her name, voice, eyes and behavior, Derpy looked less "a little different" and more "making fun of someone Different". Sad, and totally unintentional, but that's how it happened.

As it is, all signs point toward Derpy remaining a lazy-eyed background pony again. Not identifying her as "Derpy" is one thing, but I don't think that they would have anything at all to gain by actually giving her a new name.

To the anon above me: I've been there. Never let "negative people" get you down, and never let them define you by what they see as your weaknesses... but it sounds like you know that already.

  • derp

  • I'm Derping right now!

  • Am I the only one who noticed that Netflex used the altered Derpy?

    • really? I haven't seen the Netflex version yet. I hope they didn't. But if they did....oh well, at least there's the DVD that they didn't change. And to us...she'll always be Derpy. I like her new voice better though, I'll have to admit.

    • There is really no doubt that all official media will contain the edited version. It's a retcon and Hasbro will never admit they made a mistake.

    • ^ 100% true. It's Hasbro's big blunder but they won't admit it. I think we can all praise their success and hold them accountable for their mistakes, as we should anyone

    • Glad I have a version on my hard drive of the original. Derpy shouldn't have needed to be changed at all...

    • Depending on what "mistake" is on the table, they have said that Derpy appearing to have some kind of mental disorder in the first place was unintentional. Remember how many fans responded to the "stereotype" thing by saying that, no, that she was a sensitive portrayal of a pony with a mental disability.

  • I am so getting the DVD to prove my friends a bronie!

  • ....derp

  • There is a scene in Hurricane Fluttershy where Dash is listing all of the pegasai she sees by name, as a kind of roll call for the hurricane. Derpy is clearly shown in a way that sugests that she is supposed to be seen, but Dash doesn't mention her. I have thought about it, and I think that was meant to be a kind of apology to us for taking out Derpy's name. Hasbro had no real control over the complaints, but I think they wanted us to know that they are on the fans side, and would have like their shout out to us to go a lot better.

  • Listen up Hasbro, if you are going to underp Derpy forever, just don't make her appear in Season 3 AT ALL!!!!!!

    • Given that Derpy's eyes are clearly derped in her most recent appearances, I don't expect that to be a problem.

    • Anon above me: But the episodes were animated long before the Derpy incident.

    • True, but if Hasbro wanted to "underp Derpy forever", they could have edited the rest of her appearances as easily as they did in "The Last Roundup". Probably more so, since they hadn't aired yet and the only thing they would have had to do would be to rotate her eyes around.

As it is, I haven't heard any reason whatsoever to believe that anyone plans to "underp" Derpy beyond that one, very specific scene.

Honestly, I keep hearing people talking as if there's some kind of dark, determined anti-Derpy conspiracy, and something must still be waiting to happen to her as a character -- or worse yet, as a person -- even though we know exactly what went wrong and have multiple sources agreeing that she'll be back to her normal role for the foreseeable future. It's like there has to be something to fight (or defend Derpy) against.

    • I can't really blame them for thinking there is an anti-Derpy conspiracy. There always seem to be some excuse that she'll be fine.

      "Derpy will not be edited"

"The edit was made by Apple"

"It was only the iTunes version"

Will the next step be "You still have her in season 2"?

  • ~TrappedTime

I absolutely CHEERED when I heard Derpy talk! It was more exciting than just one episode alone! :D

  • Party rockin' in the house tonight! Everypony just have a good time!

  • I am going to go all Cupcakes on the person who changed her eyes in "The Last Roundup". She was perfect!...But then some offended parent went and complained. Some people are SUCH brony haters!

    • Some people won't rest until everyone is as miserable as they are. Every time I see the clip of 'The Last Roundup,' it makes me want to cry...

    • The complaints weren't the result of "brony haters" or trying to spread misery. Their reasons for writing in have already been explained, and all signs indicate that their intentions were good.

I don't think that anyone involved expected this reaction. It's not as if she was censored just for being different.

    • Actually. That's exactly why she was censored. Having "different" traits that people incorrectly assume mocks the mentally challenged.

    • If you equate "designed (unintentionally) with traits that have a long history as insensitive stereotypes" with "censored for being different", then naturally, you're going to get upset.

However, they're two very different things. The problem wasn't that someone was offended by seeing something they weren't used to and wanted hidden from view, it was the fact that they were already too used to seeing those stereotypes in action, and Derpy looked like more of the same in all the wrong ways.

    • I myself am upset because I was designed (by my mother) with these same traits that people see as offensive in Derpy. Slurred speech, lazy eyes and as a natural result I'm clumsy. That's why I see the people complaining about Derpy as the problem, the real ableists.

      • shrug* The comment didn't get posted the first time.

I myself am offended because I was designed (by my mother) with the same traits that a few people found offensive in Derpy. Slurred speech because I have a huge tongue, lazy eyes which results in me not having any depth perception, which means I can't judge distances as well and that makes me slightly clumsy.

The problem IS the people who complained, the people who keeps the stereotypes alive. Derpy was one of the... no, she was the ONLY casually and more or less realistically cross eyed character I have seen in a cartoon, while every other cartoon uses crossed eyes as the literal punch line in slapstick. I am so upset that some people felt the need set us back in this way. And I'm far from the only person who thinks this. Google "everything is alright derpy hooves"

    • Ah, there it is

    • ...well, I can answer his question, anyway. Nobody, to my knowledge, is offended by "embracing a character with derpy eyes", but...

Personally, I've been clinically diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. Social interaction has been something I've had to learn in a way that most people take for granted -- more so in person -- and it remains a challenge today. How much that has to do with Derpy, I'm not sure, although you've probably seen how many people claimed that Derpy was a positive portrayal of someone with a mental disorder. (As it is, I've heard from people with actual mental disabilities who were offended by Derpy's appearance. At least one mentioned use of "derpy" as a slur dating back to before the Derpy Hooves phenomenon.)

So, I'm sympathic either way. However, when it comes to lazy eyes... well, it wasn't just her lazy eyes. She's gotten along with those eyes for a little over a year now and I don't remember any complaining. Unfortunately, when she came into the limelight, several other things came together and turned her into something other than "a clumsy pony with two lazy eyes". (Contrast her first intentional cameo in "Feeling Pinkie Keen", where that is basically her appearance. I'm curious: Did you have any particular feelings about that?) The problems only arose when those eyes became part of a larger package that looked like a crude caricature of something else entirely.

I wouldn't say that the people who complain about seeing these stereotypes are also the ones keeping them alive. Obviously, I don't personally know them, but I don't think that they meant any harm. Lazy eyes were one element of a larger, genuinely unfortunate image. A real person -- even, say, a girl with crossed eyes, clumsy behavior, and a slow, male-sounding voice, although the name "Derpy" is a stretch -- might not be able to help the way they are designed, but a character in a show designed with intent and forethought is another story.

Honestly, when you put it that way, I'd like to see more of Derpy, too. Unfortunately, even more as a result of the fan backlash than the complaints, I think she's become too touchy for the show to handle as anything but a character in the background. For what it's worth, I'm sure we'll see her sticking around in the third season.

    • As of yet I have still not seen anyone with actual disabilities complain about Derpy.
The only people I have seen complaining about her have been "speaking for the disabled", an offensive concept in itself. But sure, among all those people that claim they're disabled and claim they like her, there must be a few exceptions I guess. There always is. If this sounds biased it is only because this is what I have observed, and I have been following this topic for months.

There was complaining about Derpy by a vocal few way before The Last Roundup, but no names shall be mentioned.

Having good intentions doesn't protect you from foolish decisions. If you offend a large group of people by trying to be inoffensive, you're still at fault.

    • Interesting.

I had been diagnosed with autism.

    • Derpy appears in 35 episodes performing innocuous actions that do NOT fit a possible definition of the word "derpy" as meaning "retarded". Derpy appears in TWO episodes doing things that COULD be "derpy" if you believe that the word "derpy" means "retarded":

To be a caricature of stereotypes, the character in question must consistently show a distorted or exaggerated set of stereotypical traits. If 2 out of 37 (about 5%) constitutes "consistent" in your mind, you are plain wrong mathematically. The only way you can accept that Derpy consitently shows exaggerated traits stereotypically associated with being "derpy" more than 5% of the time is if you IGNORE 95% of her screen time where she DOES NOT and SELECTIVELY FOCUS on 5% of her screen time where she DOES. That is certainly possible to do, but it is NOT the objective truth about how Derpy is portrayed on the show. If this line of thought is allowed to enter into the converstaion on whether or not to edit television shows, then African Americans should be immediately banned from EVER eating watermelon on television, because it INSTANTLY makes them a caricature of a stereotype, even if they only eat watermelon 5% of the time.

    • I don't think you can really claim "selective ignorance" when the aforementioned 95% of her appearances were as a background character who occasionally showed up in crowd scenes. She didn't have much of a personality until that moment.

To use your example -- speaking solely in terms of having to "ignore" all that came before and selectively focus on one scene to be offended by; otherwise, this is a terrible metaphor -- in the unlikely event that Lyra suddenly showed up as a speaking character after being a relatively prominent background pony for the whole series, only to start speaking in barely-comprehensible ebonics, munching a watermelon, and, I don't know, skiving off of work or something, audiences would probably complain, yes.

  • i just dont know what went wrong

  • Interestingly, in the second Royal Wedding episode, there is one shot where her eyes are extremely derpy (first one, Cadance approaching Chrysalis). In the other shots her eyes seem to be normal. Might be intentional, could also be an accident (the underped eyes).

  • when derpy flies fast enough she will make sth like the sonic rainboom. what is it called? sonic derp-boom? will it wall eye everypony? is it dangerous? can you imagine how awefull this could be?

  • For this pony she look like the Cookie Monster and the Actor Marty Feldmen.

  • Epic Face vs Epic Derp vs Epic Derpy........Who will win? Reply to find out!

  • Free Derpy!!!!!

    • Free Derpy? I'll take two. :D
