Speculation, for the purpose of this wiki, is any notion that is not presented outright in official material. Examples of popular speculation about the show are:
- allegedly extremely subtle allusions
- the ponies' physiology
- the veracity of Pinkie Pie's story in The Cutie Mark Chronicles
- the whereabouts of the ponies' parents
- the chronological age of the ponies
- the familial relationships of background ponies

An exception is made for placeholder names, which may be used for identification across the wiki when characters are not named in official material.
