I've been thinking about it, and rather than compiling a list of misnamed files on the forums, why not have a misnamed files category? It would make finding and labeling files misnamed much easier, rather than going into a forum and pasting the name of an image, hoping that someone didn't edit the list while you were adding it. Just a thought, opinions?  Food 25px-Surprise.png  22:30, April 14, 2012 (UTC)

Adding on to that, perhaps a misnamed file template similar to the delete template, telling what the file should be named instead.  Food 25px-Surprise.png  22:39, April 14, 2012 (UTC)
Seeing the growing list for Forum:List of misnamed files we might just add half of the files to that category. But speaking seriously, we do not need to flood the Special:RecentChanges with the category adding. It us easier to update the list. Then again, maybe we just need to go through each gallery and rename the files. Teyandee (Talk) 00:25, April 15, 2012 (UTC)
That's basically what I'm doing Teyandee. EvergreenFir 00:34, April 15, 2012 (UTC)
Then maybe you should stop it. Teyandee (Talk) 00:42, April 15, 2012 (UTC)
Just looking at the list, I see that it is only growing, and not shrinking at all. In the last 7 or 8 edits only 4 or 5 pictures were removed from the list being renamed, and many were added. I sort of attributed that to some issues we have in chat when we ask an admin to rename an image and they reply "I don't know what to name it," so I thought the implementation of a template would help with the naming issue and get more of them renamed faster, as well as the organization.  Food 25px-Surprise.png  00:36, April 15, 2012 (UTC)
No - adding categories will flood the Recent Changes. The better solution will be to ask all admins to rename the files. As I said above - there are to many files too categorize them. Just stop updating the list and ask for help. Teyandee (Talk) 00:42, April 15, 2012 (UTC)
Well, if the only concern is flooding of Recent Changes, it would be possible for a bot to this. I checked with JPanzerj, and he says he could use his bot account to add this category to only those specific images, so presumably, Grizeldroid and SweetieBot could also accomplish this. -- This is Jonny Manz, signing off! 01:33, April 15, 2012 (UTC)
The main concern is: What is the point of adding almost 80% of all the files to that list? Teyandee (Talk) 01:38, April 15, 2012 (UTC)

These things don't need discussion. If you want to make it, make it. It's a category. No big deal.  FANMADE_Animated_Derpy_Hooves_desktop_ponies_sprite.gif Sig1.png Sig2.png  01:39, April 15, 2012 (UTC)

Do you really need a category? Teyandee (Talk) 01:42, April 15, 2012 (UTC)
The other half of this was asking for the assistance of a bot to add all of the images in the other forum list to the category, and pehaps a template similar to the delete template, although at this point it doesn't seem it will be so.  Food 25px-Surprise.png  01:43, April 15, 2012 (UTC)
Yes, a bot could do it. But why even start it considering that the huge amount of files are misnamed. What is the point of categorization? Teyandee (Talk) 01:46, April 15, 2012 (UTC)
You are exaggerating the number of images. It's 20% at most. EvergreenFir 01:48, April 15, 2012 (UTC)
OK let it be 20%. Just add the list of misnamed files to the forum topic and wait until they will be renamed. What is the point of categorizing considering there will be a list of the images. We might forgot to remove that category after the images will be renamed. Teyandee (Talk) 01:55, April 15, 2012 (UTC)
That is exactly what I was doing. And you locked the page and ruined 45 minutes of my work by doing so! EvergreenFir 01:58, April 15, 2012 (UTC)
So you do not need the category? But once again - what is the point of updating is you can find a misnamed images everywhere. Teyandee (Talk) 02:09, April 15, 2012 (UTC)
I think the point was that it's easier for users to add a category to an image than copy the filename and paste it into the forum thread. The end result is the same: an admin is supposed to check the category/thread and rename the listed files. I could use Grizeldroid to add all the files currently in the thread to the category, but I don't really see why: they're already on the page, waiting to be renamed. As for future files, well, let's not get ahead of ourselves. The mountain of non-descriptive image names currently there needs to get whittled down first. --Tulipclaymore 01:56, April 15, 2012 (UTC)
Let us tech users to add the misnamed files to that forum. For me it is easier to watch the page than the category. Teyandee (Talk) 02:09, April 15, 2012 (UTC)
I just noticed that there has been almost no renaming of any of the images on that list in about 2 or 3 weeks. I attributed that to admins not know what to rename these files, as this is a common problem when asking an admin to rename a file with a very vague name. I understand where you are coming from though.  Food 25px-Surprise.png  02:03, April 15, 2012 (UTC)
They will be renamed eventually. Teyandee (Talk) 02:09, April 15, 2012 (UTC)

Then off of what Tulip said, would it be good to create a category for newly uploaded images from now on? (Seeing as you locked the list forum.)  Food 25px-Surprise.png  02:20, April 15, 2012 (UTC)

As I said above - I do not see the point of this category right now. If you want to update the list I can unprotect it. Teyandee (Talk)
Yes, please.  Food 25px-Surprise.png  02:50, April 15, 2012 (UTC)
Done. Teyandee (Talk) 07:38, April 15, 2012 (UTC)
