Forums: Index > Wiki discussion > List of non-720p images

This forum will list show images that are not 720p; they should be updated with higher-quality images. One episode's images will be posted at a time (in airing order) to reduce page size, allow more fine-tuning per post, and due to limitations in my program. The list is generated using a list of all images in subcategories of Category:Episode images, so images that are not categorized in the proper episode images subcategory will not be included (feel free to list manually any that are skipped), and there may be results that need not be reuploaded - please check whether an image is intended to be the size it is before uploading over it (ask if unsure), and feel free to remove entries that do not need to be improved (let me know if there's a pattern in name, category, etc. and I'll see if I can have the program skip those). The search was merely for 1280x720 dimensions, so it may have missed some images that do still need improvement and happened to be the right size (same for 1920x1080 images, which are found but not listed here). When working on this list, please try to remove several entries at once rather than removing only a couple per edit, or ask me to re-run the program for an overall update. ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 08:26, January 9, 2013 (UTC) [edited various other times]

Users[]

List here any users that commonly upload(ed) images that are at 1280x720 or 1920x1080, and thus will be ignored by the program, but have imperfections that need to be corrected. I have no idea how to make something that could recognize logos, watermarks, and borders on show images, and I don't have time, so unfortunately that stuff will still need to be checked manually.

  • Arisaka - Keeps uploading lowish quality images with watermarks.
  • Haedman, perhaps - of the ones that are 1280x720, they're not terrible but I'm not sure they're HQ.
  • Ocredan - many near the bottom have borders and watermarks
  • Xx Mr Brony xX - many older ones randomly are low-quality, watermarked, and/or bordered. It's hard to pick them out because they aren't consistent. It may be easier just to go through every gallery and try to spot them (tip: go to edit, change them to uncropped and increase the size, preview and look that way [make sure you don't save if you do that]).

Images that should not be cropped[]

In general, images in galleries have no reason to be cropped. In many other uses it is also sufficient to say "look at X part of the image" instead of cropping it out and leaving a lot of needlessly cropped images all over comments and such. This is a list of cropped images that should be replaced with full ones. Full versions are likely already to exist and can most often be found in the episode's gallery. Feel free to add to this list.

Comments[]

Placeholder so I can just paste the output when I wake up. The program takes a very long time to run, since each page lookup takes several seconds and it's going through somewhere around 22,000 pages. Also, I could just re-run the program to get an updated list if necessary in the future. Please make sure you read the notes at the top of the page, this'll probably grab some profile images and such and it's important that images that need to be cropped stay that way. I also generally don't upload over cropped images if people have used them on profiles and stuff, but it's also of note that in general, images in galleries shouldn't be cropped (so if you need a full image for a gallery but can't upload over the image that is used you may need to upload it separately). I've said a lot (probably too much, as usual :P) so if you have any questions in general or about specific images then please ask. ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 08:26, January 9, 2013 (UTC)

We're going to have a serious amount of cropped images on this list... hah.  Food 25px-Surprise.png  11:47, January 9, 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I'll try to remove as many that don't need to be reuploaded as possible before posting, and the rest can be removed as they're found. So, my program ran for two hours and made it through about half the list (11,000 files, to around "Rainbow Dash d") and then something happened and it couldn't check the rest. So, new plan, I'll just run it for one letter at a time and wait until the list is clear before doing another. That should make things easier. Also I won't post the 1080p images, since there's no need to improve them. And as for the Unchecked section it looks like mostly characters like ñ and ? messed it up, so hopefully there won't be too many of those. I'll start it off slowly with pre-alpha characters, not very many files on this list. ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 22:08, January 9, 2013 (UTC)
Can you fix the program?
--Who would win in a fight between you and yo mama? 23:38, January 9, 2013 (UTC)
In terms of getting the entire list? I doubt it. My best guess is that my school's network didn't like how many requests I was making and temporarily restricted my access. I'd have to try it again and try to find out what the error was and if I can fix it, and it's not really worth doing that. Doing one smaller range at a time works better, I think. ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 02:42, January 10, 2013 (UTC)

Update: not sure why I didn't think of this before. Made it so it'll skip over images containing these phrases: [' crop ', ' cropped ', ' id ', 'promotional', '.gif']. Let me know if there are more I should add. Also fixed the thing with question marks (that's a unique situation) so now the only thing it can't handle is non-ASCII characters, and that would require more research to fix. ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 04:44, January 11, 2013 (UTC)

Wow, that sounds like a seriously flexible program. Did you write it yourself? And if so, in what language?  Food 25px-Surprise.png  04:46, January 11, 2013 (UTC)
Yep, all the programming I've done for this wiki is done by myself, in Python. And I use AWB to generate the lists of stuff to go through. ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 04:55, January 11, 2013 (UTC)
Why did you re-add some of the images that I removed from the list?
--Who would win in a fight between you and yo mama? 04:58, January 11, 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, I pasted the whole list without checking if some had been removed. Took 'em back out. ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 05:07, January 11, 2013 (UTC)
When will the other letters be uploaded?
--Who would win in a fight between you and yo mama? 09:40, January 12, 2013 (UTC)
I'll be doing one letter at a time to avoid overwhelming the list. If you want, and actually this may make more sense, I could do it by episode category instead. Would that work better? ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 10:20, January 12, 2013 (UTC)
Yes. And sorry about some of the images I recently replaced. I replaced them because they were in my personal gallery. Also, I was under the impression that you would be doing one letter per day.
--Who would win in a fight between you and yo mama? 10:30, January 12, 2013 (UTC)
Alrighty, S01E01 up now. Sorry if it was unclear, I wanted to do one chunk at once and let that one get taken care of before posting a new one so it's not too much at once. ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 11:01, January 12, 2013 (UTC)

This looks like something I can do Saturdays. The Americanized Brony18:25, January 13, 2013 (UTC)

Couple questions: Shouldn't "id" pictures (used on character pages/lists or have a filename ending with "id") be left alone? Also, what of decent-quality pics of 768p (1366x768)? Should they be converted to 720p anyways? ImperfectXIII (talk) 00:32, January 25, 2013 (UTC)

1) Yes.
2) Yes, and don't convert them; they need to be retaken in 720p.
--Who would win in a fight between you and yo mama? 00:36, January 25, 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, I was already skipping images that contain " id ", and now I've added " id.png" to the list. I think 1366x768 must have been scaled somehow, because as far as I know (granted, even people who know a lot about this stuff seem to disagree on a lot of things, it's really crazy) 720p and 1080p are the only high-definition resolutions. And sorry for the delay, I can't tell when we're nearing the end of the list so poking me to put up the next set would be helpful. ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 05:44, January 25, 2013 (UTC)

Okay, still have to wait another day until I'm an autoconfirmed user (until I can update images). That's the price of a name change. The Americanized Brony00:51, January 25, 2013 (UTC)

Next time you ad an episode gallery to this list, could you please upload the images in the order in which they appear in the gallery?Reversalmushroom sig 01:43, February 19, 2013 (UTC)

Does the program grab the images in alphabetical order or sequential order?Reversalmushroom sig 03:04, February 19, 2013 (UTC)

I just feed it the list of images in the episode's category, because some of them might not be on the episode gallery. That's alphabetical order. I think I can modify it to sort it according to the gallery, though; I'll get that running before posting the next set. ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 04:13, February 19, 2013 (UTC)
Not feeling it right now, that would be a lot of work/extra code and it doesn't seem like it would be a huge benefit, since usually you can tell by looking at an image where in the episode it came from. Might look at doing it eventually, we'll see. Thanks for the suggestion at least. ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 07:06, February 19, 2013 (UTC)

I think it's time we had ourselves another scan. Reversalmushroom sig 00:10, March 14, 2014 (UTC)

Quite right. I finally converted it to a proper script: see HERE. I will archive this forum in a few days. ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 08:21, March 14, 2014 (UTC)
