Return to Triple Threat

So...anyone else wonder why Spike would worry about Thorax and Ember not getting along? I mean sure, they're both relatively new leaders of fairly divergent kingdoms, and who knows whether Changelings and Dragons have had any relations-presumably bad-before, but doesn't seem like much of a basis for them disliking each other. --Voltron23 (talk) 01:55, May 25, 2017 (UTC)

Spike is Thorax and Ember's friend. The last thing he'll want is two friends trying to tear each other limb-from-limb!

Spike's gonna become ambassador to the dragons and changelings at the end of the episode! It would give him an excuse to see them more, and keep the relations between ponies, dragons, and changelings healthy! After all, Spike is ambassador material, and it is proven that so many times! --Mega Sean 45 (talk) 00:06, August 13, 2017 (UTC)

It would seem a bit much for him to be ambassador to both species; I think it more likely that he'll be the ambassador to the dragons while Starlight will be ambassador to the Changelings. I've actually had thoughts along these lines for the main/major characters:
  • Twilight-is the Princess of Friendship, so wouldn't really be an ambassador.
  • Rarity-don't really know what group you would send her too, unless you bring the Diamond Dogs or Bat ponies back into the story.
  • Rainbow Dash-seems like a good ambassador to the Griffons.
  • Fluttershy-would probably serve as ambassador to the Breezies.
  • Applejack-maybe ambassador to the Buffalo?
  • Pinkie Pie-already serves as ambassador to the Yaks?
  • Spike-would most likely be ambassador to the dragons in my mind.
  • Starlight-again, seems like she'd be a good fit for the Changelings.

The teaser image has got me curious: are we looking at an actual event or just an anxiety induced fantasy? If the former, it wouldn't surprise me if Spike is going to end up inadvertently triggering the confrontation between his two friends by his own suspicious behavior-they'll each come to think that the other is a villain that Spike is either trying to deal with alone or being threatened by, and will thus come to his "aid."--Kilmarnock228 (talk) 10:37, August 15, 2017 (UTC)

Okay, having seen the actual teaser, it seems clear that the confrontation will actually take place.--Kilmarnock228 (talk) 10:30, August 16, 2017 (UTC)
What's wrong with being ambassador to both species? He started the alliance between ponies and dragons by helping Ember become Dragon Lord, and then Spike helped Thorax get accepted which led to his leadership. Starlight is more of a reformer than an ambassador, that's why she's going to try to reform Thorax's bro-bro in To Change a Changeling. Since Spike is Thorax's closest friend and helped him become accepted to ponykind, it would make more sense if Spike were the one to keep the relations alive, but Starlight would make sure the other changelings accept Thorax's rule, and help see the light of love! I mean if Starlight were to do EVERYTHING that involved Thorax, what was the use of having The Times They Are A Changeling turn out how it is? Why didn't Starlight just stand up for him instead of Spike? Starlight's the reformer, Spike's the peacekeepr! It makes sense; it fits his potential destiny perfectly! Spike was a good ambassador to the yaks too during Wings Over Yakyakistan, but since Pinkie has already taken that job, that's off the table. --Mega Sean 45 (talk) 21:29, August 18, 2017 (UTC)

My guess for this episode is that it's going to turn out to be Spike's anxiety making things seem worse than they are. My suspicion is that it's going to turn out that the Dragons and Changelings, as warrior cultures, will both have traditions of engaging in shows of aggression upon meeting other leaders for the first time (basically to prove their own strength and to show respect for the other's strength). It's a bit like how Klingons in Star Trek will end a rousing drinking song by headbutting each other. There's no real malice in it, just a really, really weird culture.

I imagine that the third threat (to make it a 'Triple Threat') will be Spike's fears actually potentially making matters worse through accidentally escalating things by taking it too seriously.

Hm, an interesting theory; I had half wondered if it might turn out that Ember and Thorax had actually met before and were friends.--Kilmarnock228 (talk) 21:15, August 18, 2017 (UTC)

Is this the first episode they showed a pegasus+unicorn romantic dinner? Seems usually they keep to their own kind. talk2ty 15:39, September 10, 2017 (UTC)

That does seem to be a common trend, though it seems like the franchise has made it pretty clear that members of the three breeds seem okay with pairing up with each other. I mean, between the show and comics Big Mac has been the object of affection for Fleetfoot (a pegasus), Sugar Belle (a unicorn), and even got a peck on the cheek from Princess Luna (an alicorn), and all that besides attraction from fellow Earth ponies. Additionally, while the parents of each of the Mane 6 are all matching couples, you've got Shining Armor and Cadance, are pairing between a unicorn and a pegasus-turned-alicorn (according to the books, anyway). It also looked like Party Favor and Night Glider were doing more than just hanging out during Hard to Say Anything.--Kilmarnock228 (talk) 20:32, September 12, 2017 (UTC)

We should divide tv and comic canon. I think unicorns can magic up wings but not vice versa. Ep 1 was "winged unicorn", this Alicorn nonsense came later. Cadence would have been a unicorn. Onlyunicorn mares can care for unicorn fillies.o ly magic can counter magic. Big Mac aside (his handsomeness crosses all barriers) are there any other named examples? Any background besides these diners? talk2ty 16:52, September 17, 2017 (UTC)

Considering that they're officially considered the same canon, that's kind of hard. As for only a unicorn mare being able to take care of a unicorn filly, you're forgetting Mrs. Cake; I would imagine that task might be somewhat more difficult for an Earth pony or pegasus, but it's certainly not impossible. For that matter, the Cake's own family seems to suggest pairings between Earth ponies and the other breeds, given that it serves as Mr. Cake's explanation for how the twins can be a unicorn and pegasus born to two Earth ponies. So far as I can think of the two diners from this episode-and possibly Party Favor and Night Glider as I mentioned previously-are the only clear-cut cases we have of possible pegasus/unicorn couples, but in nearly a full seven seasons and 100+ comics and various books I may be forgetting about/unaware of others. --Kilmarnock228 (talk) 08:45, September 18, 2017 (UTC)
