Hi guys, it's 343 here. You may know me as the person who sorts out images and occassionally rollback edits or even from chat. I'm here because I know that MLP Wiki has already achieved very high quality and that somewhat makes me feel a bit useless sometimes. I'm keen however to help with the mainspace, filespace and anywhere else I can, so I made this forum for people to leave an insight on what they think could be improved about this Wiki (administrators will do very well in this forum).

Forever yours, 343TheGuiltyProphet - Talk 19:53, March 5, 2015 (UTC)

Things That Could be Improved[]

I and others have created a few pages that dynamically update with things that need fixing. For files that might need renaming (please note that not everything listed there does), there is Project:DPL. If you're looking for something to do, try to make a dent in the list of non-720p images (again, note not everything there needs to be reuploaded). ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 03:26, March 6, 2015 (UTC)

Further things to be improved[]

Not really technical stuff, but you asked what can be improved, so here we go:

  1. Galleries of the oldest episodes are quite lacking and differently saturated - iTunes versions of episodes had a problem with low color saturation which was not present on the TV, but it's no longer the case form Season 2 on. Moreover, episodes S1E1-S1E14 are cropped on the borders in the original iTunes encodes - both color saturation and cropping is fixed in Australian re-encode, also on iTunes. I'm guessing most people use the iTunes versions in galleries, but checking for consistency can be a tough job.
  2. Some images still have Hub logo on them, even the non-transparent ones sometimes.
  3. Episode thumbnails could use improvement - a lot of them depict a general shot on a place, like Boast Busters or SSCS 6000 - almost nothing can be made out from such pictures, since they're so small. Thumbnails should focus on a specific thing and be easily recognizable by someone not familiar with the show - one of the best thumbnails in my opinion is Putting Your Hoof Down's one.
  4. This solution to lacking and/or crowded infobox images could be very good.
  5. The categorizing on Animals article is weird - actually all animals are sapient in the show, just not all of them can speak "English". They should be sorted by their ability to speak.
  6. The colors in character infoboxes are not exactly average reader-friendly and rely on an external website color descriptions, and due to these names they are also crowded. Can we even be sure what color of mane, coat etc. is canon? (TV, iTunes, Facebook images, Flash pony games - all of them can have a slightly different shade). The Polish version of FiM wiki has an excellent solution to color boxes - see for yourself on any character page there.
  7. This is probably just a thought on my part, but the Quotes sections on episode pages are useless. Come on, does anyone actually read them? Are they even worth mentioning without a context? I think a better solution would be to put a single quote on top of character and episode pages, one that describes them - like "This is an anemometer. It measures your accelerative velocity and translates it into wing power, thus gauging your cumulative H2O anti-gravitational potential. Any other questions?" for Twilight - imagine something like that on top of her page - an unfamiliar reader would immediately acknowledge her personality.
  8. Do background characters' pages really need a table with each of their appearances measured by time? Can't they just use Y/B/M/N template? Again, the times can also be slightly different on TV and iTunes.

In reply to #2, feel free to tag watermarked/logo'd images with {{file improve}}. Since those can only be detected by manual inspection, people tagging them when they see them would be very helpful. That goes for any obvious visual defects like that. ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 02:36, March 11, 2015 (UTC)
In reply to #7 – yes, I find them extremely useful in case of background ponies, especially when they are complete. A quick glance at that section allows me to quickly find all of the episodes when they had speaking lines. Such information could perhaps be found in the introduction, but it's not as prominently displayed as in the quotes section.
As for number #8, I've never found myself using it, but it's a good idea, since background ponies might be harder to find than regular ones. We already include such info in mouseover notes when it's necessary. We should probably try to unify the timestamps to iTunes releases. All TV timestamps are technically fanmade, since all commercials has to be cut out for it to be viable. I believe the ads might be the reason of these inconsistencies. Song Video Names[]

As started by Jonny Manz here, it would be great if all song videos on the wiki could be given names that adhere to FW:DN, as many don't right now. http://i.imgur.com/B0lGGoQ.gifOz   17:27, March 9, 2015 (UTC)

Thanks all for posting here, I'll look into them. 343TheGuiltyProphet - Talk 19:37, March 9, 2015 (UTC)
Just want to say, I feel like there wasn't a whole lot of input into what I have added onto the naming policy, so consider most of it open to constructive debate. Some things may be different now due to changing circumstances as well. ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 02:39, March 11, 2015 (UTC)

This thread[]

I linked this thread from Project:Community portal. Since it's now "sticky" or a continuously-updating thread, please archive it by moving the archived content into Forum:To-do list/Archive 1 etc and linking to the archive in a right-aligned floating table at the header. Video categorization[]

Another ongoing project is to sort anything in Category:Videos into one of the subcategories; each one has a description of what should go there. If any are too broad they may need splitting. Some suggested categorizations based on file names are at User:Lyra Botstrings/sandbox (warning, slow load). However, the majority of files still loose in the category will need to be inspected manually. ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 07:25, October 25, 2015 (UTC)

I would like to dedicate myself to this task :). I'll get started immediately. 343TheGuiltyProphet - Talk 19:13, October 26, 2015 (UTC)
Make sure you replace Category:Videos rather than adding the appropriate category in addition to it. ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 00:38, October 27, 2015 (UTC)

Image sources[]

Find and credit sources for images per the source crediting guidelines. You can use {{source}}, a regular wikitext link, or just text in the case of citing a book or something. Some images that may be missing source information can be found in Category:Images missing source information, though these were mostly marked automatically and some may have a source. You can also look through various image categories for non-show images missing a source. Google image search can be useful for finding sources, but make sure you're not finding reposts. I also have some tricks at User:Bobogoobo/Sources, as well as a script I never got working that can find a list of images missing source information, useful once that category is smaller. ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 18:50, October 26, 2015 (UTC)

Animatic on DVD[]

Season 5 animatic images of The Cutie Map - Part 1 need non-cam versions (available on Season Four Disc 4 DVD). (7)6(four) (talk) 15:15, November 30, 2015 (UTC)

Uploading higher quality international images[]

The past few days I have been adding the file improve template to numerous international files as many of them have massive watermarks or are of very low quality. Any new uploads would be a great help! 343TheGuiltyProphet - Talk 19:32, December 11, 2015 (UTC)

It should be noted, however, that watermarkless version might simply not exist yet or it will never exist. Similarly, some screenshots will never be available in HD quality. At other times we might be forced to choose between HD and watermark (for countries where HDTV is more common than Blu-Ray discs etc.). Keeping the watermarks also gives us some level of certainty that the image was not tampered with.
In case of videos it is common to edit the recorded audio into HD video from English videos. It has some benefits, but it also makes them technically FANMADE. If the video is already HD and with watermark, changing it into non-watermark version gives no notable benefits except the removal of the watermark at the cost of making it FANMADE in the process. Editing this way requires some skill. Even if the country has the policy of no ad breaks during the episode, the length of black-out segments may still vary. And then you need to remember about framerate conversions. Done poorly, it can result in incorrect lip-synching. Vengir (talkcontributions) 11:01, March 14, 2016 (UTC)

Gameloft mobile game character misidentification mess[]

Note this. (7)6(four) (talk) 06:40, December 13, 2015 (UTC)

This is just a software error with sprites. It doesn't affect everyone and not everyone in the same way. We should probably not bother with it. Vengir (talkcontributions) 22:11, January 14, 2016 (UTC)

Category Fan-named characters needs cleanup[]

Category:Fan-named characters seems to have lost its way. Pages in the category need to have references that the name of the character was co-opted from fans, like Derpy, Steven Magnet, or Golden Harvest. I'm not suggesting removing all the unreferenced pages, for example Mayor Mare is defintely a fan name that became official, but I can't find any good sources for this info. Even though the category is not exactly coverage of the fandom, it does raise claims that the names originate in the fandom, and those claims should be cited. Throwy 21:25, June 1, 2015 (UTC)

I agree. Perhaps this discussion would interest you! Dogman15 (talk) 19:24, December 8, 2015 (UTC)
And in turn, this discussion expands upon part of that discussion. (7)6(four) (talk) 23:46, July 2, 2016 (UTC)

Gameloft mobile game file(s) character identification[]

Identify:

  • "Hay-waii Delegate" ("This pony hails from where tall palm trees grow -- it's a safe thing to bet that she's never seen snow!")
  • "Hoofton Delegate" ("The South is where this pony's city is at -- she came a long way, and we sure like her hat!")
  • "Seasaddle Delegate" ("This pony's hometown is cool when it rains, and famous for organic veggies and grains.")

(7)6(four) (talk) 04:25, March 3, 2016 (UTC)

I'm guessing the first two are "Tropical Dream" and "Yuma Spurs", since character models of them are in the game's files. ImperfectXIII Wiki signature FANMADE ImperfectXIII OC pixel animation 16:40, March 14, 2017 (UTC)

Language of magazine[]

The European magazine comic whose French version is titled Trixie n'abandonne jamais! and whose Hungarian version is titled Trixie soha nem adja fel!, written by Marta Jamrógiewicz and illustrated by Monika Nikodem, also has an English version; this English wiki's coverage of said comic shouldn't (as it currently does) focus on the French version. (7)6(four) (talk) 03:56, May 9, 2016 (UTC)

Some additional info that I've gathered so far:
  • Every issue (monthly) has a comic story. It can be either a retelling of an episode, or something original. Even original stories are almost never submitted to EQD.
  • Trixie's story (Polish title „Trixie się nie poddaje”) is the first one from this magazine for which somebody was credited. The second one, also by Jamrógiewicz and Nikodem, is Shining Armor's one (Polish title „Shining Armor i sprawy rodzinne”). Between those two there was a usual story retelling the episode Simple Ways for which nobody was credited, as usual.
  • The French edition might be slightly different. I've noticed in Shining Armor's issue that they had a comic retelling the episode Slice of Life. That would then be the second comic in an issue (something that at least Polish edition doesn't do). It's absent in Polish edition, and EQD commenters reported it missing from more versions, UK included.
  • Two Polish YouTubers deal with the magazine in some way. Piro is an MLP merchandise reviewer; he reviews a lot of stuff, sometimes as random as MLP branded juice. The other one is Pluszcz, known mostly for his interlanguage stuff. He and his friends are occasionally releasing parody comic dubs as a „Łódzki Fandub” series. Facebook link updating[]

As I and others have encountered, some Facebook links' functionality changed to depend on formatting:

Either we need to manually update links or Facebook needs to restore functionality. (7)6(four) (talk) 16:50, August 17, 2016 (UTC)

Definitely seems like a bug, since nearly identical posts are treated differently. But if they've been that way for almost a month, I'm not sure how receptive Facebook is to bug reports. ~Bobogoobo (talk) 40?cb=20120702121758 07:02, August 18, 2016 (UTC)
