My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Wiki

There are many templates in use in My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Wiki; these are only a subset, representing some of the most important and commonly used ones. If you feel that a template belongs on this page, do not hesitate to add it.

  • Category:Templates should cover all templates in the wiki, categorized into the various subcategories.
  • The Template namespace (found from Special:Allpages) always has all templates in the wiki, sorted alphanumerically.

What are templates?

Wiki templates provide a means to insert the same content over and over in different (or the same) pages. This saves editors the hassle of duplicating the same text again and again, and also helps ensure consistency.

Templates are generally shown with the format required to use the template (e.g. {{clr}}). Clicking the template name takes you to the template's page, where you can see what it looks like. Some templates have parameters, signified on this page with a number inside angled brackets, like so: <1>.

Detailed instructions on the usage of each template should exist on:

  1. a subpage using {{documentation}}; or
  2. the template page itself (inside "noinclude" tags); or
  3. the template's talk page.

For more information on templates, see Help:Templates.

Article management templates

Nominate an article for deletion

{{delete|1}}

  • Add this to an article to nominate it for deletion. It will add the article to Category:Candidates for deletion. An optional parameter specifies a reason as to why the page was nominated for deletion.

Nominate an article for the Workshop

{{workshop|1|sentence}}

  • Add this to an article if you think it is not long enough for the main section of the wiki.
  • The unnamed parameter should be used to specify areas of the page that need to be expanded, or need to be added in the first place. The named parameter can be used to rephrase the sentence before that.
  • A discussion can take place in the comment section after the template has been placed, but a page should be moved relatively quickly.
  • The template can also be used on a Workshop page itself, in the same way.

Merge articles

{{merge|1|for|talk}}

  • Add this to two articles that cover the same or almost the same topic.
  • The unnamed parameter should be used to specify which page it is proposed the page on which the template is placed be merged with.

Split an article

{{split|1|2|for|talk}}

  • Add this to a very long, sprawling article that should be split into two or more pages.
  • The first parameter is mandatory and needs to specify which pages would exist post-split. The second parameter is optional and can specify requirements that might have to be met before a split can take place (such as more content to a specific section of the page).
  • The parameter named "for" can be used to specify a specific reason as to why the page should be split.
  • Proposed splits should be discussed in either the comment section or the forum, and the split either carried out, or the template modified or removed depending on the outcome of the discussion. If the discussion is carried out in a forum thread, the "talk" parameter should be used to specify that thread.

Copyediting

{{copyedit|1|for}} or {{ce|1|for}}

  • When a page contains numerous mistakes, whether in formatting, spelling, tone, grammar, or something else, stick this template onto the page, either to let other contributors know what needs to be done, or to remind yourself to cleanup the page at a later date.
  • The first optional parameter will replace the word "article"; use it for when only a specific section needs cleanup.
  • The second parameter, called "for" and also optional, allows you to specify exactly what needs to be copyedited.

Content management templates

In-universe content

{{In-universe}}

  • Articles should be written from a viewer's or reader's perspective, not from the perspective of the characters. Use this template for articles that don't adhere to the guideline and are in need of improvement.

Category templates

General category template

{{category}}

  • This can be added to categories to add general categorizing details. Use in cases where it may be useful to point out to users how to categorize, such as popular categories.

Template category template

{{templatecategory}}

  • This should be added to any template-related categories, to list template-specific categorizing details, which differ from those of normal pages.

Linking and redirection templates

Link to Wikipedia

{{Wikipedialink|1|2}}, or
{{subst:Wikipedialink|1|2}}
{{Wlink|1|2}}, or {{subst:Wlink|1|2}}

  • Use this template to link to an article at Wikipedia. The first parameter is mandatory (the name of the page you want to link to), the second optional (the text you want to display).
  • Use of the subst prefix is preferred (so the links don't show up as template graphics in visual editing mode).

Link to fan labor-based wiki in see-also section

{{Fan labor|1}}

  • Use this template on pages which have a counterpart on the My Little Pony Fan Labor wiki. This primarily concerns character profiles.
  • The parameter is technically optional, but needed for articles which have a different name on the Fan Labor wiki (for instance, compare Golden Harvest and Carrot Top).
  • The template should be placed in a "See also" section.

Infobox templates

List of infoboxes

Infoboxes are preformatted tables containing a number of short facts about a given topic. They are one of the most widely used template types on the wiki, and they are perhaps best edited in visual mode. A list of the existing infoboxes specific to this wiki:

Infobox fields

.
Kind .
Sex .
Residence .
Occupation .
More info
Eyes .
Mane .
Coat .
. .
. .
Nicknames .
Relatives .
Cutie mark
.
Voice .

.

The infobox to the right (an {{infobox character}}) is fully expanded, with all available content-fields filled in (with a single dot in this case). The other infoboxes have similar categories, but related to what each infobox is specialized for. Most of them should be self-explanatory, but for any questions, the proper infobox's documentation should be consulted.

Inline templates

Citation needed

{{citation needed}}, or {{cn}}

  • Use this template after a claim of uncertain veracity which does not give any examples or other references.
  • If the claim is not backed up after a reasonable amount of time, you can remove the sentence.

Dubious

{{dubious}}

  • Use this template after a sentence of uncertain veracity where examples are provided, but the wording of the claim is somewhat questionable.

Specify

{{specify}}

  • Use this template if you come upon a claim that you deem accurate, but that isn't supported by examples.

General wiki templates

Clear

{{clr}}

  • This template is used to reduce the amount of non-wikicode used on pages, replacing the code <br style="clear:both;" />. Its use should generally be avoided.
  • You can use {{clr}} instead of the HTML tag that clears space below things like images, pictures and tables, so the following stuff doesn't begin until the bottom of the image, picture or table box.

For

{{for|name|link}}

  • Use at the top of articles as a simple "for x see y" template.

Main article

{{main|main article}}

  • Use at the start of a section to link to the main article on it.

Right-aligned Table of Contents

{{tocright}}

  • This template floats the table of contents (toc) on the right. It should only be used when absolutely necessary, to keep consistent design.

Sandbox

{{sandbox}}

Title

{{title|custom title}}

  • When used without a parameter, it removes the first part of a subpage's title. For instance, "Twilight Sparkle/Gallery" becomes simply "Gallery".
  • When used with a parameter, it changes the visible title of a page to the parameter. That is the primary use of the template; for instance, the very long "My Little Pony Friendship is Magic: Adventures in Ponyville" turns into "MLP FiM: Adventures in Ponyville" to fit the wiki's layout better.
  • The changes are purely cosmetic and do not affect the page's URL.

T is for template

{{t|template}}

  • This template allows you to show example template code (with a link to the templates) without using the template itself. It is used extensively on this page.

Wikipedia

{{wikipedia}}

  • Wikipedia-related template. Use {{wikipedia}} for articles taken directly from Wikipedia.

Where you may find more templates

  • Wikia Templates
  • Wikipedia; may be copied with the proper acknowledgment, but some need tweaking to work properly on Wikia, so use a Wikia one if possible.
