Princess Mi Amore Cadenza, otherwise known as Princess Cadance, is a Pegasus unicorn pony who is first featured in A Canterlot Wedding - Part 1, alongside Shining Armor, her husband-to-be. She is the former foal-sitter of Twilight Sparkle as shown in a flashback, and becomes Twilight's sister-in-law after the marriage of herself and Shining Armor in A Canterlot Wedding - Part 2. Various promotional materials, including a New York Times ad[2] and official episode summaries, state that she is the niece of Princess Celestia.

DevelopmentEdit

Lauren Faust was involved in the inception of the story in which a Princess named Cadence appears. At that point in development, she was not designed as a Pegasus unicorn, and Faust was surprised to see her as such; the decision was made after she was no longer working on the show.[3]

NameEdit

Cadence is a musical term meaning modulation, inflection rhythm, or the closing sequence of a musical phrase. The Princess' name was inspired by that of the daughter of a Hasbro Studios executive.[4] The original spelling was used by Hasbro in early publicity material and some products, but the later variation "Cadance" is now used exclusively and prominently in publicity material and products.[note 1] Prior to the episodes' airing, a New York Times ad gave Cadance's full title as Princess Mi Amore Cadenza,[2] which is Italian for "my love cadence".

Wedding invitationEdit

Cadance is first mentioned by Twilight Sparkle in A Canterlot Wedding - Part 1 when Twilight reads aloud the wedding invitation sent to her from Princess Celestia. Twilight is invited to "the wedding of Princess Mi Amore Cadenza and... [Twilight's] brother", Shining Armor. Twilight immediately resents the situation for not being told about it personally by her brother, and doesn't recognize the name "Princess Mi Amore Cadenza". When Twilight gets to Canterlot and confronts her brother about the wedding, he tells her that Princess Mi Amore Cadenza is Cadance, her old foalsitter, and Twilight gleefully calls her "the greatest foalsitter in all the history of foalsitters" then goes on to praise her as "beautiful", "caring", and "kind" in her voiceover of a flashback of her childhood where she is foal-sat by Cadance.

Cadance, as Twilight describes, is caring and kind in the flashback. She greets Twilight with a hug, bandages her and wipes her tears when she's hurt, plays with her on a swing-set, tells Twilight she feels lucky to be her foal-sitter, and does a little song-and-dance with her. Twilight's voiceover says Cadance spreads love wherever she goes, while a brief scene shows Cadance casting a spell that quells an argument between two ponies. Twilight mentions in the flashback that Cadance is a princess.

Impostor CadanceEdit

with the song-and-dance from the flashback, but Cadance coldly rebuffs her. Throughout the episode, Cadance raises Twilight's suspicions with her "demanding", "totally insincere", and "rude" behavior, as she tells her friends. She tries to broach the subject to Shining Armor, but Cadance interrupts before they have a chance to talk and takes Shining Armor into another room. Twilight, peeking through the door, sees Cadance casting a spell on Shining Armor, and concludes that she's "downright evil" then runs off. Twilight confronts Cadance at the wedding rehearsal, in front of Princess Celestia and the rest of the attendants, which makes Cadance run away from the rehearsal in distress. Shining Armor explains that the spell Cadance used on him is meant to ease his headaches, and excuses Cadance's behavior as stress from the wedding preparations. Rebuked, Twilight is left alone to regret her accusation and strained relations with her brother in a short reprise of the song B.B.B.F.F. Cadance returns and trods on a toy-like image of Twilight from the song sequence; Cadance at first looks down compassionately at Twilight, but then her eyes shine green, her face becomes cruel and she encircles Twilight in green flames, which pull her into the ground as the scene fades to black and the episode ends.

The real CadanceEdit

The story resumes with A Canterlot Wedding - Part 2. Underground, in "the caves beneath Canterlot", the imposter Cadance taunts Twilight through apparitions in the caves' crystals. She tells Twilight that the caves are the ideal place to keep those who try to interfere with her plans. Twilight attacks the apparitions and eventually breaks open a passage to a scuffed and scared Cadance who almost immediately recognizes Twilight and tells her she's been imprisoned by the impostor Cadance. She does the song-and-dance from Twilight's flashback, and the two ponies hug warmly.

Cadance and her impostor share a song sequence, This Day Aria, with Cadance and Twilight making their way out of the caves while the impostor prepares for the wedding and begins the wedding ceremony. After the song, Twilight and Cadance are confronted by the three former bridesmaids Lyra, Minuette and Twinkleshine, who block their way out of the caves. The scene cuts to the impostor and Shining Armor almost completing their wedding ceremony, when Twilight and Cadance interrupt the wedding, and a brief flashback shows Cadance throwing a small bouquet to distract the bridesmaids. Cadance declares that the impostor is a changeling, and the impostor reveals herself as queen of the changelings, who is named Queen Chrysalis in the episode's script but not on-screen. Cadance charges the queen, but she backs of when the queen threatens to send her back to the caves. Princess Celestia tries to overpower the queen with her magic, but is defeated, surprising everyone, including the Changeling Queen. Celestia sends Twilight and her friends to get the Elements of Harmony, but they are captured by the Changeling Queen's minions and brought back to the wedding hall, where Celestia is imprisoned in a cocoon and Cadance's hooves are glued to the floor.

Twilight takes the opportunity, when the queen is preoccupied, to free Cadance so she can reunite with Shining Armor, and her magic snaps him out of his trance. Shining Armor tries to perform a spell to repel the changelings, but he doesn't have the strength to repel them. Cadance tells Shining Armor that her love will give him strength, and the two's magic spreads outward and repels all the changelings and their queen off into the horizon.

Twilight and her friends help Cadance put together her wedding, with arrangements meeting her enthusiastic approval, and Shining Armor jokes that Cadance agreed to marry him after he told her she'd be gaining Twilight as her sister. At the wedding, Celestia proclaims that the power of Cadance and Shining Armor's love is undeniable, and pronounces them "mare and colt". The couple look onto the castle courtyard and wave to the cheering crowds, then kiss.

After a wedding reception montage, Cadance and Shining Armor enter their chariot and Cadance tosses a bouquet, which Rarity violently catches. The happy couple then ride off into the night, presumably going on their honeymoon.

    Goodness, that article. "Pegasus unicorn" instead of simply Alicorn? Also, the URL has it right: Her name is CADENCE--NOT "Cadance." That is an unfortunate misspelling. Her full name is Princess Mi Amore Cadenza. Cadence is both a word and a name; it's a musical term. (Surely you've all heard about the "authentic cadence" and "deceptive cadence" so cleverly used in the aria?)

    Anyway. I was somewhat baffled about her parentage as well, because in order to be Celestia's niece, she would have had to be the daughter of an as-yet unknown third sibling, or Luna (which would've been totally possible, except that it now doesn't appear to be the case--they didn't mention it once, and Luna didn't act like her mother at all...she even flew in towards the end and asked whether she'd missed anything. That would seem a bit more likely to happen at her niece's wedding than her own daughter's, right?)

    Now, I guess I'm assuming that it is similar to the Prince Blueblood situation--a more distant relation, though probably closer than he is to the two royal sisters, and yet still referred to as "niece" or "nephew." I seriously doubt that Fleur de Lis is related to them. Sure, she has the uncommon "princess-like" body type, but even if she were a relative, she'd probably be distant...more so than Blueblood. Otherwise, Rarity would have surely recognized her.

      Well, for the Cadance thing, see this. That's where we decided, based on the number of sources using Cadance vs Cadence, that her name would be spelled as it is. As for the alicorn thing, I agree that it's a better term, but it's also not a show term, so "pegasus unicorn" is more accurate to the show (which is why that's used).

      With regard to "Alicorn": It refers to the substance as well as the species itself, and is very commonly used. From Wikipedia: "A winged unicorn, pegacorn, unipeg or alicorn is a fictional equine with a set of wings and a horn.

      The term alicorn, which describes the theoretical substance that a unicorn's horn is made from, has also been used as a name for winged unicorns." However, since the term "Alicorn" has so far not been used on the show to identify a "Pegasus unicorn," and the site is apparently trying to limit itself to the series' absolute canon...then I can kind of understand.

      Re: The possible third sibling...hey, it would be pretty amazing if s/he were a villain! :D Interesting thinking.

      Re: spelling of Cadence's name...ah, thanks for that. I remain convinced that all of the Cadance spellings are merely peoples' mistakes, because it's just one letter and doesn't really affect the pronunciation, so if they were unaware of the correct spelling (and lacked or ignored spell-check), it would be a fairly easy error to make...after all, it's Cadenza, not Cadanza. ;)

    I know it says that Cadence is Celestia niece, but I find that info hard to believe. She could have been given the title princess for being born an Alicorn, she doesn't need to be related to blueblood or the princesses at all. Considering you can see that she aged significantly from her foal sitting days to her marriage, notions she is not immortal. We know from the cake twins that both unicorn and pegasi genes are recessive so the chances of being born an Alicorn are small but possible. She could be a princess from an ally country of equestria that lived her life in canterlot because of her home country had some sort of troubles. All in all I don't think she is or needs to be related to celestia.

      manipulation. even her name given the context of the episodes seems -to me at least- to suggest the end of life at the start of a husband/wife relationship. I mean, come on, the power to force people to fall in love instantly cant possibly be used for anything but evil, even if she did have good intentions.

      It does seem to go against the "Hearts and Hooves" day moral about not forcing ponies to be together. No matter how well-intended, you can make a case that Cadence is brainwashing ponies.

      But that's over-thinking it. It's intedended to be sweet and innocent and not over-analyzed, even though older members of the audience will realize the contradiction.

      I like to see the pony races as different in culture,which is only strengthened by the episode Hearth's warming eve .

      My theories are given the information given from the show,more accuratly Hearth's warming eve.

      The pegasus where determined, fearless warriors.The unicorns where regal and reserved.The earthponies are hardworking and strong workers. Maybe;

      The pegasus have a ceremony which could involve weather and speed.When two pegasus fall in love they enter courtship in a set of trials that would help the two not only be strong as a mother and father but as two parents. These tasks would have to be something the pegasus are responsible for. (A sun pegasus would have to help the sun shine brightly,or a rain pegasus could gather a large amount of water...just examples.)

      The unicorns could pass on the rings much like how indians(Not native americans) hold onto gold as a financial dowry. It is a status symbol of your wealth and your family's worth to the unicorn society.( Which is strongly hinted to in Rarity's trip to canterlot) There are no poor unicorns,and we dont even see any "middle class" ones either.

      A considerable amount of earthponies live as farmers/traders or handyponies. They do manual labor. A farmer's life isn't highly profitable(from what I've seen) most farmer's are middle class to in the brink of poverty. A wedding no doubt would be a serious investment or food and time,time and food they could sell or spend on thier growing crops. Maybe in the case of a earthpony marraige it is a feast of the family's crop,since buying a ring or jewelry wouldn't fit to well with a harkworker's gritty posture.(Do you see applejack wear jewelry?)

    in part 1 twilight called her the best foal-sitter in the history of foal-sitters
