The Mysterious Mare Do Well
Secret of My Excess
Staying at Canterlot CastlePrincess Celestia leads Rarity into her guest room in the Canterlot royal palace, explaining that Twilight Sparkle notified her of Rarity's trip. Rarity is thrilled with her elegant room and repeatedly thanks Princess Celestia, even kissing her hoof. Meanwhile, a bellhop struggles with Rarity's luggage and collapses under the weight.
Rarity and Opalescence are then seen at a tea shop. Rarity pronounces herself as "a Canterlot pony at heart" and decides to sew a dress for Twilight to express her gratitude. Twilight's birthday party is scheduled for later during that same week. Rarity is approached by a posh couple who admire Rarity's "chapeau", but when Rarity dismisses it as "an old thing", a grubby, buck-toothed window cleaner addresses her as a friend from Ponyville. The couple realize that Rarity is from a small town and quickly lose interest in Rarity's hat, dismissing it as "country". Insulted, Rarity returns to her room, and begins designing Twilight's dress.
The Wonderbolts DerbyOn her way home after shopping for clothing and dress materials, Rarity bumps into Fancypants, a sophisticated unicorn. He warms up to her after she lets slip that she is currently staying at the palace, courtesy of Princess Celestia herself. Eager to associate with her, he invites her to the Wonderbolts Derby from an exclusive box seat.
Back in her guest room, she weighs the pros and cons of attending the event: she will gain new opportunities in Canterlot as the guest of an important pony like Fancypants, but will lose time to work on Twilight's dress. After much thinking, she decides to go to the derby. Initially, Fancypant's other guests ignore Rarity's presence, but are impressed to learn that she is staying in the palace. To the other ponies' surprise, she bets correctly on the winner of the race. She says that her friend Rainbow Dash knows the Wonder Bolts well, but when the ponies ask her where she got to know Dash, she lies, saying that Dash is their trainer. This further convinces the society ponies that Rarity is someone of importance and flood with invitations to dinner parties and charity events. Rarity swiftly gains status and popularity at the expense of Twilight's dress, to the obvious disapproval of Opalescence.
Becoming popularA montage follows, where Rarity sings about being an adored socialite pony. She appears at an art exhibit and other ponies anxiously await her approval of an exhibit. At an auction for a vase, every pony raises his hoof when she raises hers. At a party, her companions observe her every move and wait for her to take the first hors d'oeruvre. She looks on at an opera, laughs with Fancypants on his private yacht, and ceremonially begins the maiden voyage of an airship. The song ends when she sadly rests her head on the bare mannequin for Twilight's dress.
An unexpected invitationAs her time with the other unicorns ends, Rarity goes to work on Twilight's ensemble, but falls asleep before finishing. The next morning, as she prepares to depart for Ponyville, she receives an invitation to the Canterlot garden party, which she describes as a major social event second only to the Grand Galloping Gala. She is torn between returning home and attending the garden party. She writes a letter lying that Opal is sick, and that she cannot make the journey home in time for Twilight's party.
Bringing the party to RarityHowever, when she opens the door, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Applejack, Rainbow Dash and Twilight are right on her doorstep, saying that to avoid Rarity missing the party, they've brought it to Canterlot for her. With her plan foiled, Rarity hastily makes Opal look ill by drenching her in water, which seems to fool her friends. Twilight sees her unfinished dress, but is pleased with it, praising its simple, practical design that reflects her personality. Rarity tags along with the other five ponies to one of the castle's ballrooms, which was reserved by Princess Celestia just for Twilight's birthday party. Pinkie Pie demonstrates her "party cannon", namely, the ability to fully decorate a party table with one boom.
Rarity is shocked to discover that the garden party is taking place just outside Twilight's birthday hall, and the walls are made of glass. Twilight's wild party contrasts with the formality of the garden party, and Rarity does not feel comfortable in either of them. In order to appear to be at both parties, Rarity spends a short amount of time at one party and then goes to the other. She tries to enter and leave each party undetected, but when she reenters Twilight's party with a croquet mallet in her mouth, it becomes obvious that she had been in the garden. Scared and surprised, she doesn't know how to explain herself. Luckily, Twilight assumes she was mingling with the elite to promote her boutique, and praises her savvy business sense. Rainbow Dash tells the group to go into the garden and show the ponies how to party "Ponyville style".Much to Rarity's dismay, her five friends make a mess of the party. Pinkie Pie's party cannon explodes confetti and Twilight props up the gramophone blaring music while the five friends conga around. Rainbow Dash sends her croquet mallet flying, knocking off the wig of a fancy pony. Fluttershy, sitting on a tree branch, befriends the birds in the trees who are scattering feathers onto the guests standing below. Pinkie Pie greedily devours the cake by mushing her face into it. Applejack weeds the garden, splattering mud everywhere and saying it's a "garden" party after all. Twilight, who is still wearing her plain dress, dances terribly and is oblivious to the disgust of the Canterlot elites. Fancypants notices Twilight's antics, and asks where she got her dress. Twilight is about to say that a very close friend from Ponyville made it for her, but is interrupted by a mortified Rarity. Twilight says she needn't be so modest, and tells everyone that Rarity made the dress and that Rarity knows the other five. The shocked Canterlot ponies whisper amongst themselves and her friends wait for Rarity to confirm the truth. Rarity begins to walk away from her friends, but stops and proudly declares that she does know them, calling them her best friends and the most important ponies she knows. While the guests laugh derisively, Fancypants compliments Rarity's "charmingly rustic" friends and applauds Twilight's dress, stating "every mare in Canterlot will want one". The guests immediately change their tone and ask for a dress like hers, but Rarity avoids them and happily introduces Fancypants to her friends.
EpilogueRarity begins to write a letter to the princess on friendship, but Princess Celestia comes in person to hear it for the second time since Sonic Rainboom. Rarity says that no matter where you are, you shouldn't ever forget your home and friends. As they finish they see the bellhop asking them to hurry up before being buried in Rarity's luggage once more.
- Rarity: Oh, but it isn't nothing, it's everything! I, I just don't know what to say but thank you, thank you! [kissing her hooves] Thank you! [kiss] Thank you! [kiss] Thank you, thank you, thank you! [more kisses]
- Princess Celestia: You are very we--
- Rarity: Thank you!
- Hayseed Turnip Truck: Rarity! Hey Rarity! Whoo! It's me, Hayseed Turnip Truck! We met at the big hoedown in Ponyville last month?
- Rarity: Oh, yes, of course... how are you?
- Hayseed Turnip Truck: Good! Real good!
- Rarity: ...and then I said, “Puh-lease, that isn't a hat, darling, that's a natural disaster that somehow landed atop your head!"
- [ponies laughing]
- Pinkie Pie: Hi again!
- Applejack: Listen to her. She's so excited to see us she can hardly talk.
- Opalescence: [yowls]
- Rarity: I am so sorry about this.
- Pinkie Pie: Isn't it fancy pants?
- Rarity: Fancypants?! Where?!
- Pinkie Pie: Oh, I never leave home without my party cannon!
- Pinkie Pie: Tada!
- Rarity: [hushed] I need to use the little fillies' room!
- Rarity: [exhausted] I... have to... go to do... the... thing... with the stuff... you know...?
- Rainbow Dash: Uh, what's with the croquet mallet?
- Rarity: [muffled by croquet mallet] What croquet mallet?
- Rainbow Dash: Duh, the one in your mouth!
- Rarity: [laughs nervously] Ooh, that croquet mallet.
- Applejack: How come y'all aren't doing any gardening? This is a garden party, isn't it?
