So, now that our eighth and possibly final main villain has had her defeat scene in Rainbow Rocks, let's talk about the villain defeats.
There's no need to say what my favorite kind of villain defeat is or how sure I am that one of them got it when most others think she survived. That is not the subject of this blog.
No, this blog is to discuss which villain defeats you liked or didn't like. Which was your favorite one? Which ones satisfied you, and which disappointed you?
Since polls seem to get more results than comments, I'll ask these questions in the polls. But first, a recap.
1.) Nightmare Moon
Mane 6 use the Elements of Harmony to turn her back into Princess Luna. The type of villain defeat is dependent on how you view Nightmare Moon. Some view her as Luna corrupted, which is the impression the episodes themselves give, in which case, Luna is restored to her true self. Others view her as a manifestation of Luna's jealousy magnified into a form of its own to possess her (as implied by Lauren Faust, even Luna hints that she was thinking independently of Nightmare Moon inside her when she says "I've missed you so much big sister"), in which case she was destroyed. Shattered to pieces. What's left of her lays around Princess Luna when she is restored, probably to be scavenged by vultures.
This hasn't had many reviews as she is the first villain of the series, but Luna is extremely popular so however you interpret Nightmare Moon, I think they're satisfied Luna is still with us.
Mane 6 turn him to stone (for the second time) with the Elements of Harmony, in the episode he is main villain of. Then in Season 3, Celestia has Twilight release him and Fluttershy reforms him.
For turning to stone, people were disappointed to see him "die" (even though it's clear that didn't kill him coz he returned from this once before) with an expression of fear frozen on his face. They say they got rid of him too early. For his redemption, many raged that it "ruined the character", moving Chrysalis to the position of fan favorite villain until we saw more of Discord in Season 4, at which point he regained his title.
3.) Queen Chrysalis
Princess Cadance and Shining Armor use the power of their love to send Chrysalis and her changelings flying over the edge of Canterlot, "blasting off" in a similar style to Team Rocket.
While this almost certainly killed her, as she seemed unable to use her wings and the fall is much longer than falls known to be fatal to ponies, many believe she survived either through use of her wings or resistance similar to that of Team Rocket, simply because they love her too much to want her dead, in spite of what she did to Twilight, Cadance, and Shining Armor (IMO her turning everypony against Twilight was the most depressing moment of the show). It is on this, and this alone, that Katie Cook (who is a pegasister and not involved with the show) brought her back in the first arc of the comics, which are only canon if you want them to be. Meghan McCarthy has never mentioned Chrysalis after the episodes, so it's up for us to decide for ourselves what we think her fate is after the fall.
4.) King Sombra
Princess Cadance and the Crystal Ponies destroy him with the power of the Crystal Heart. This is one of the most spectacular technicolor villain deaths in history.
As with Chrysalis, fans wanted him to survive so they convinced themselves that he could regenerate from his horn. This confuses me because I thought he wasn't very popular. People think he's lame for lack of screentime and dialog, what do they care if a "lame villain" can no longer return? Atleast Chrysalis was tied with Discord for fan-favorite villain and her fall was staged in a similar way to Team Rocket. And when Meghan McCarthy confirmed his death, people were disappointed.
It is at this point that I think they decided not to go for any more villain deaths, unless it was either a far inferior non-speaking villain or in a way left up to our interpretation.
5.) Sunset Shimmer
She turns good when Twilight and the Humane 5 use the Elements of Harmony to blast her evil side out of her.
While Sunset Shimmer's redemption is clear, the nature of her demon form can be interpreted in one of two ways: a.) Is Sunset Shimmer with her evil side at its strongest, or b.) Is the manifestation of Sunset's cruelty, drawn out by the crown to possess her (speaking of her past memories because she was once part of her), and therefore, as a semi-separate entity, was destroyed. (although there are a few notable differences from Nightmare Moon, such as, we don't see pieces of her evil form laying around her when she is restored, and she did not seem to think independently of her demon form)
People were disappointed by this (a few were actually hoping they'd kill her off), but I wonder if their opinions might have changed now we've seen the new Sunset Shimmer all through Rainbow Rocks.
Twilight destroys them by returning the Elements of Harmony to the Tree of Harmony.
This got absolutely no reception because few even consider the Plunderseeds to be actual villains rather than a force of nature created by Discord. As such, I do not expect any to even give mention to them in comments below, nor will I include them in my poll.
7.) Lord Tirek
The Mane 6 use Rainbow Power to blast him back to Tartarus where he is imprisoned in a cage. This can be interpreted in two ways: a.) They teleported him there and made the cage appear around him, or b.) They destroyed him, as Tartarus is hell which is where he'd go if he were to die (thus the ones in cages are the dead ones and Sombra has one there too). Like Chrysalis, until further evidence comes up it's up to us to decide for ourselves.
People were actually disappointed at his reimprisonment (with few considering Interpretation B) because after Tirek destroyed Twilight's library and sent the other three princesses (one of which, as we know, is Luna) to hell, they wanted him to be killed for this.
8.) Adagio Dazzle
Adagio, Aria, and Blaze are de-powered by Twilight, Sunset Shimmer, and the Humane 5, and I think they run off after the audience throws fruits and vegetables at them. They're no longer a threat, but no death, imprisonment, or redemption. And no "two ways to look at it".
So, here's the polls. How did you feel about the defeat scene of...
