Hello everypony!  Miipack603 here with another blog post, this time about the most recent addition to the Equestria Girls franchise, Friendship Games.  So buckle up, because I've got a lot to talk about.  Minor spoilers, by the way.

First off, let me begin this review with this is the best movie out of all the Equestria Girls movies!!!  Without a doubt, this movie had tons more excitement, action, and dynamic elements and story-telling than the previous releases.  I loved almost everything about this movie, and I truely hope that they continue with this franchise, despite some of the negative comments from seasoned bronies about it.  Speaking for anyone who wants to see this movie completely blind but also wants to watch the sneak peeks, I saw basically every sneak peek there was for this special and I was still surprised and entertained by the movie.  It had the perfect balance of action, humor, and top-grade story-telling to ensure that my night was made when I watched this.  Now, let's get down to the particulars:

First of all, I thought that it was an interesting move to have the characters from the human world take the spotlight instead of pony Twilight coming through the portal again, so we got more development within that world.  Although I would have liked it better if Sunset was able to go through the portal to Equestria again, I'm happy with how they still managed to incorporate certain elements of the pony world into the human world.  Another thing that I really liked about this special was that there were a lot of songs with this movie, but it didn't feel like a musical like the previous movie did. My favorites have to be The Friendship Games and Acadeca (even though I still have no idea what it stands for/means).

Now, on to the characters.  I liked how they handled a lot of the characters' personalities, namely Sci-Twi, Sunset Shimmer, Princess Cadence, and Principal Cinch.  Upon first glance, it may seem like Midnight Sparkle is the the real villain, and Principal Cinch is only trying to uphold her reputation, but to me, it seems like there is something deeper going on with Cinch and I wouldn't be surprised if we see her in future movies.  I liked the role-reversal of Sunset and Twilight towards the end and the little bits of interaction between different characters (Luna and Cadence, Derpy and Flash, etc.)

On an ending note, I thought I'd go into a bit more detail on one of my favorite parts of the movie: the very end, where Twilight comes through the portal and sees her human counterpart.  I was hoping for a little more pony/human interaction from this movie, but i was still satisfied with this scene, especially when Pony Twi mentions being stuck in a "time travel loop", which I took to be confirmation of the subject of the Season 5 finale.  However, this sounds a lot like what Thomas and Friends used to do, in which they would release a season with new characters who were officially introduced in a special which would air after the season began.  This created some continuity issues, which I hope does not happen frequently with the MLP franchise.  Other than that, great movie nonetheless!

Most Memorable Moments:

  • Introduction of Cadence and Shining Armor into human world
  • The second Friendship Games event
  • Non-dragon Spike talking
  • Twilight "unleashing the magic" and transforming into Midnight Sparkle
  • Pony Twilight meeting Sci-Twi

Overall, if you haven't guessed by now, I really liked this movie and hope we see this amount of effort into the actual series.  I give it a 9.5 out of 10 and highly recommend it to any fan of the MLP universe.

P.S.  I'm now on Fimfiction, net, which is a site for fans to create their own stories about the MLP universe.  My username is JohnDarkblaze15 and I have a couple of stories up already with another few in the works, if you'd like to check them out!
