I ran into a poll recently regarding a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic movie asking the fans if they want to see a movie get released in movie theatres. I gotta admit, the idea itself sounds really cool. On the other hand, though, it could make or break a really good thing here. It's definitely a gamble, in my opinion. I think most people know that producing a film is expensive. You have to wonder -- what if box office sales are lower than the cost of producing the film? If that were to be the case, then it's considered a bomb at the box office. Also, could there be an effect in producing new episodes over budget concerns? What if the film is "Hollywoodized", or they try to change what was in the television series and use celebrity actors and mainstream musicians over the regular talent? Because of those concerns, I don't believe that having a theatrical film is necessary. As a matter of fact, I'd be happy with a solid direct-to-video release. Some of my favorite shows that are out of production didn't need a theatrical film, so why does FIM? Definitely be careful with what you wish for.
