So lately, there have been questions as to whether or not the princesses' true species name is "alicorn" or not. On the crew's side of the show, it appears the word "Pegacorn" has been used in the scripts, although the writers have definitely acknowledged the name "alicorn",
Now only two names remain: “alacorn” and “cerapter”. Both are derived from their own languages, both describe the creature as well as they can, and neither can be considered more “correct” than the other. Choosing one over the other, it would seem, is once again a matter of personal preference.

- It is unimaginative and ill-conceived. "Derp" has become a popular internet term for anything with crossed eyes or the like. "Hooves" was most likely added as a surname to indicate that this character was, in fact, a pony. In other words, it was made to distinguish this character from other "derpy" characters on the internet. Both of these factors add up to a quick, barely-thought-out name.

After viewing the first season of MLP: FiM multiple times, it's come to my attention that there are a select group of background ponies who appear consistently in Ponyville, more so than any other background ponies. They include 6 earth ponies, 6 unicorn ponies, and 10 pegasus ponies, making for a grand total of 22. They typically exist in pairs, with two ponies sharing the same design with different colors.
