Begin Chapter 2

After his very dramatic entrance, The Candlekeeper proved to be a very friendly pony. He seemed to be one of those people who could be serious one moment and then be completely calm. I reasoned this, because during his debrief of the current situation, he would periodically pause and crack jokes. Maybe he was just trying to keep us calm, and considering we were in the midst of a war that could become the first ever Equestria World War.

-

“The armies of the other causes have withdrawn for the time being. I believe that we will be fighting again by the time you raise the Sun in the morning. Also, I do have a casualty report. It seems a few of the weaker armies have been crushed like flies. It seems Flash Sentry’s army and Snips and Snails’ army have both fallen to a unyielding frontal attack. Besides them there have been many casualties; 51 to be exact.”

-

“And it will only get worse,” Grovyle put it, “I’ve seen this kind of fighting break out in different places outside of the reaches of Equestria. Trust me a war like this is not pretty.”

-

“You still haven’t answered my question Candle. Why are they doing this? What’s the point a futile power struggle?” I inquired, “It seems, to me at least, like a stupid thing to do. Why ruin the peace by trying to prove who deserves to rule. I’ve provided them sunlight for over a millennium. Why are they trying to kill me? Shouldn’t they be fighting for me

-

Candle turned and gave me a death stare. ” He Shouts, “Did you not see what they were doing out there? Did you not notice that they were trying to kill each other? Did you notice that they were unyielding, showing no sign of letting up? Did you not notice that? Did you not notice that your sister, Luna, sent a deadly assassin at you without hesitation? Huh? Did you?”

-

“I-I-” I stutter.

-

“Newsflash Miss Sunshine Butt, they want to kill you just as badly as they want to kill every other person on that battlefield. It’s possible they want to kill you even more than anyone else since you are the ruler of this land, or to them the tyrant. Wouldn’t it be a massive victory if they could put your head on a spike.” Candle challenges.

-

“Okay, Candle that’s enough you are startling her, she’s just been through hell. She can’t stand to see her subjects fighting like this. She tries to keep peace in her land. Love and tolerance, right? Well it seems their tolerance is gone and they have lost their love for each other.” Grovyle stated, “Don’t worry I promise I won’t make this like the War at the Rift.”

-

“War at the Rift?” I asked, “What is that?”

-

I hear Candle curse under his breath. “Why did you have to say that Grovyle. I told you after that war was over to never speak of it again. Also, to never mention it’s most infamous participants. Now I have to answer the question, ‘War at the Rift, what is that?’. Celestia do you want to know what Grovyle is talking about?”

-

I think about it for a second and decide that maybe this can be useful information to know. I nod my head ‘yes’, and he begins his truly haunting tale. “It happened years ago, in a place far beyond the borders of Equestria. In a place called Grieta or the Rift. A village, I forget it’s name, was on the father reaches of Grieta.  A religious group called Ninpundo came to the village and asked the citizens if they would join their religion. Now don’t get me wrong, Ninpundism is a fair religion, but they can be kind of…” Candle paused.

-

“Violent?” Grovyle put in.

-

“Yeah you could say that.” Candle continued, “Well some of the villagers agreed to join their religion, but a few refused and said they would die before they joined their cause. Well their leader, Missionary UglyTurtle, took that very seriously. His religion main aspect was the philosophy of Uglyism; a philosophy where that if you aren’t with them, you are against them. They waged a war against the villagers; trying to turn them to Ninpundists by force. This war caught the attention by more ponies in more places than it should have. Soon other ponies were taking sides and we had a massive Civil War on our hands.”

-

“I chose to side with the Ninpundo side and so did Grovyle. There was one certain individual that was questionable. His codename was UnknownProdigy, because he could clear rooms without being seen or heard. He was the prodigy of death, a master of stealth. He didn’t carry a gun, but instead two wickedly curved, foot long knives. You did not want to be on the other end of those knives. He never went anywhere without them. He often went to sleep with one of them in his hand; you did not to wake him up unless you could do it from a good way back. His knives were named Back and Biter, and they lived up to their names.”

-

“Now before I go on; I need to tell you about a few rather important people on the village’s side. One named Crystal Blue another named Bluelighting, and one last one named The Bunker Guy. They were roaming mercenaries, and they were quickly snapped up by The Resistance. They were truly trained and well disciplined soldiers. They gave us a lot of trouble as they were very accurate sharpshooters and could pick of whole regiments with their silenced snipers. It was rumored that during a firefight they killed everyone in the unit, but one survived. UnknownProdigy survived to tell the tale. He said that he had slipped away, but after what he would do later in the war, it seemed that something else may have happened on that day.”

-

“The war had been fought for over four years to this point. It seemed that we had picked the right cause in the Ninpundists; despite the Deathly Trio, as we called them. Then, the unpredictable happened. We were about to head out to The Resistance’s front, and we went to the corporal's cabin. One of the newer recruits went in to wake him up, since he hadn’t come out to meet us like he usually did. We then heard a shout of urgency and we all ran inside to see the corporal with his head on his desk. Blood dropping from his neck, and the recruit’s face, shaking his head as he struggled to find a pulse. A note was also on the wall with the corporal's knife keeping it up on the wall. The note said: ‘You always knew me as the prodigy of stealth and killing. I didn’t simply walk away from those mercenaries, they bartered my life for service to them. Watch your back.’ It was signed by none other than UnknownProdigy.”

-

“It was later reported that he had triple crossed everyone, as he had in fact stabbed his commanding officer in the back. He did infact used those knives to bite back. He then became a rogue. He must have stolen a sniper rifle, and a powerful one at that. During major battles, you could hear .50 Caliber bullets firing off and taking down random people from both sides. These bullets could take down multiple people at a time and could penetrate bricks. I was almost taken down by him, but his aim was off and he took down another one of my allies.”

-

He then stopped talking and stared off into the distance. Grovyle gave me a look like ‘maybe we should leave him alone for a while.’ We walked outside and I realized that it was time to raise the sun for the new morning. Yet another dark was coming, and I had the keeper of light on my side. Hopefully, he could pull through his bout of depression to help us with the war effort. I already saw the armies gathering at the edge of the battlefield. Luna’s army were all crowding the front line, downed in their blue armor and proudly parading their emblem. Their army was not very large as it only had a few people, but we weren’t that large ourselves.

-

As we surveyed the field I heard Grovyle let out a gasp of horror. “Oh Celestia help us if that is who I think it is.”

-

I looked at him slightly offended, but I was curious. “What, who is it?”

-

The words came of his tongue in terrified whisper. “It’s him, the archangel of death. It’s the prodigy of twists and turns. The UnknownProdigy.”
